Local MS and MP secure Royal Mail ‘U-Turn’ on decision to move Maesteg Sorting Office

Local MS Huw Irranca-Davies and Chris Elmore MP are pleased that Royal Mail have listened to local residents and reversed their decision to move the Sorting Office from Maesteg to the Waterton Industrial estate and have announced that customers will be able to collect items from the Sorting Office in Maesteg.

Chris and Huw have been working closely with Royal Mail since the announcement that the Sorting Office would be moved following the closure of Maesteg Post Office and campaigned for a solution to be found that would ensure Maesteg retained its Sorting Office in the town.

With no public transport access to the Waterton Industrial estate and a 25-mile round trip for many in the constituency, Royal Mail’s decision to move the Sorting Office to this site has provoked furious backlash within the constituency.

Chris Elmore MP said: “Our local post offices offer a vital service, particularly in more rural areas where they are often the first and only port of call for local residents. Many residents would have found it incredibly difficult to access a Sorting office sited elsewhere and I am very pleased that Royal Mail have come to the conclusion that a Sorting Office in Maesteg would serve the local community best.”

Huw Irranca-Davies MS said: “The coronavirus pandemic has shown us all how much we rely on local services. Communities, like those in the Llynfi Valley, need key services to be located within easy distance. I am very happy to hear of Royal Mail’s decision and would like to thank them for finding a solution for customers in our constituency.”

Customers will be able to collect items on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays between 3pm and 5pm and on Saturdays between 2pm and 6pm. A date for when this service will commence will be made in the near future.
