Huw Irranca-Davies, Labour candidate for Ogmore, has presented Sony UK Technology Centre (UKTEC) with a prestigious certificate from the All-Party Parliamentary Corporate Responsibility Group (APCRG). This certificate recognises Sony’s work in increasing its green credentials, strengthening its ties with the Valleys community, and implementing successful training and apprenticeship programs.
Huw nominated Sony for the APCRG ‘National Responsible Business Champion award’ early this year before Parliament dissolved. Recently Sony UKTEC was one of ten companies shortlisted across the UK. This places the Pencoed company in line to win the overall national award.
Huw Irranca-Davies, a long-time supporter and advocate of Sony UKTEC’s work, said “This certificate recognises Sony’s commitment to our local community. In recent years the Sony UK Technology Centre has established itself as part of the backbone of our area. In addition to its role in our local economy, Sony UKTEC’s contributions to the education of young people have been outstanding. It brings me great pride that Sony UK Technology Centre is a jewel in the cronw of Pencoed, Wales and the United Kingdom.”
Sony UKTEC uses modern manufacturing techniques to produce both Sony and non-Sony products to exacting standards, including the only high definition Sony camera units built outside Japan and the popular Raspberry Pi micro-computer. Over the past decade Sony UKTEC has gone from strength to strength in business all whilst remaining good environmental custodians by reducing its carbon footprint to 62% and increasing its waste recycling to 98%.
The business has shown serious commitment to strengthening ties with the local communities and actively encouraging schools and other local groups to use its facilities. Additionally, it works with Osprey’s and Cardiff City Football Club to fund multimedia Family Learning Zones and engage in community school and education programmes to promote learning of different industries. Sony UKTEC also provides numerous training and educational opportunities for its staff as well as students from the local community.
