Attended by many local residents and organisations, Bridgend Community Transport held a ‘drop-in’ information event at the Fairfield Centre Maesteg, hosted by Special Families Maesteg, and organised by local AM Huw Irranca-Davies, together with Member of Parliament Chris Elmore and local councillor Richard Collins.
The event provided details of the company’s wide-ranging services aimed at assisting people who are disadvantaged through lack of appropriate transport, and to help them maintain an active and engaged social life.
The Bridgend Community Transport minibus was brought to the Fairfield Centre site, giving many people the chance to climb aboard and see first-hand the facilities available. Company Manager Graham Cartwright and one of the volunteer drivers were on hand to speak at length to dozens of attendees about their fully accessible minibus, dial-a-ride community car, Town Rider and ‘wheels to work’ services for individuals.
Speaking after the event, Mr Irranca-Davies said: “It was really encouraging to see so many people turn out to hear about Bridgend Community Transport. My thanks to Graham, Kelvin and team for providing an excellent discussion about their transport options, which for many people can be the way they go shopping or reach their medical appointments, or to visit friends and take part in social activities.
Chris Elmore MP added “Our huge thanks also to the Special Families group for hosting the event at the wonderful Fairfield Centre which now provides a host of wide-ranging community services in addition to the support they provide for families with children with additional needs. Pop-in and see the incredible work they do.”
Bridgend Councillor Richard Collins said “It was good to have the chance to talk with so many local people about their individual transport needs. Whilst Community Transport won’t be for everyone, for some it is an absolute life-line to friends and family and gives the chance to keep active out-and-about in the community.”
