It’s that time of year again when the winter lurgy or flu symptoms make an unwelcome appearance.
Vaccination is the single best way to protect yourself and others against influenza (flu), a potentially life threatening illness. The annual NHS Wales Beat Flu campaign is now underway and encourages everyone eligible for flu vaccination to get protected.
The free vaccine is now more widely available including all primary school children and pre-schoolers aged two and three. For the first time the vaccine is also being offered to staff with regular client contact working in residential care and nursing homes this winter.
Ogmore Assembly Member Huw Irranca-Davies who is also the Welsh Government Minister for Children, Older People and Social Care is urging people to take advantage of the free vaccine which is available at GP surgeries and local community pharmacies.
Huw said: “Flu can be debilitating and in some instances deadly but is still largely a preventable illness. I would urge people to take advantage of this free vaccine to help stop the spread of flu. Even if you had the vaccine last year it is still important to get vaccinated again this year to protect yourself this winter. Providing the vaccine to staff in adult care homes will help protect care home residents who are more vulnerable to complications from flu and will help reduce the spread of the virus. Ask your family and friends today if they have had their flu jab.”
