Visit to Optometric Practice – ‘An Eye Opener’ for Ogmore AM

Chatting with Practice Owner Nick Maydew

Ogmore Assembly Member Huw Irranca-Davies was recently invited to local optometric practice ‘The Eye Centre’, based in Ogmore Vale to hear all about their work and the success of optometric practices in Wales.  During the visit he met with Practice Owner Nick Maydew and Sali Davis Chief Executive of Optometry Wales.

Following a brief tour of the centre and after undergoing his own eye test, the Assembly Member stated: “Community Optometrists play an important part in local economies as part of the healthcare team in rural and urban areas. We are lucky to have our very own optometric centre here in Ogmore on one of our local high streets.

My thanks to Nick, Sali and their team for a very interesting visit. On hearing about how community optometrists are helping to save sight, diagnose, manage, and treat eye conditions, I would encourage Ogmore residents to ensure they undergo regular eye examinations.

Practice Owner Nick Maydew said: “Regular eye examinations are an important health check-up and can play a vital role in the detection of various health conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.

We are proud to have Huw Irranca-Davies AM visiting us as part of our commitment to the Wales Eye Care Service which allows patients in Wales to access eye care across Wales free of charge to those who meet the criteria. We hope that Huw’s visit will encourage as many people as possible to have regular sight tests..….with more than half of all sight loss in the UK being recognised as avoidable, we are really pleased that the Wales Eye Care Service still provides us with the opportunity to see our patients close to their homes, in the community’.
