Huw welcomed the huge rise in academic standards over the last year at Coleg Cymunedol y Dderwen, during questions to the Cabinet Secretary for Education at the National Assembly. The Minister responded with praise for the leadership shown from top to bottom in the school.
Coleg Cymunedol y Dderwen, a school in Huw’s constituency in Ynysawdre has seen a record breaking year of GCSE results with 93 percent of students achieving at least five GCSE grades at A* to C (34 percent higher than in 2015). This followed the appointment of a new Executive Head Teacher, and the support of Schools Challenge Cymru from the Welsh Government and local authority.
Huw also in recognition of the school’s success said, “In a remarkably short time, under a new executive Headteacher Nick Brain and with strong leadership right throughout the school, both staff and pupils have done exceptionally well and should be very proud of their achievements, as I am! These exceptional results are the best in the history of the school, and even better than the results of its two predecessor schools of Ogmore and Ynysawdre Comprehensives.”
Huw Irranca-Davies AM has called on the Welsh Government to support and help build on this success to make sure that it is now continued long into the future, so that all pupils no matter where they live, no matter what background they come from, have the very best opportunity in life.
