At an event hosted in the Senedd, Huw met with nurses and healthcare support workers from Ogmore and South West Wales who called on him to support their ‘Leading Nursing Shaping Care’ campaign launch.
The Royal College of Nursing Wales wants to work with the Welsh Government to ensure the safe provision of the ‘Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act 2016’. They hope to ensure sustainable workforce planning is at the heart of the NHS and sufficient numbers of nurses are educated to help fulfil the Act’s aims. They feel that the Act’s provisions also need to be extended to other areas such as mental health and the community.
Huw in support of the campaign stated “this historic Welsh law which is the first of its kind in the UK will protect patients by empowering the ward sister/charge nurse and Nurse Director equally, to ensure there are safe nurse staffing levels. The RCN members across Wales in all sectors have campaigned hard in the Assembly making a case for this legislation and safe staffing in our hospitals should be a priority concern.”
