Age Cymru held a celebratory event at the Senedd recently showcasing their national arts in care homes programme ‘cARTrefu Cymru’.
The two year hands-on project has worked with 20 artists to deliver nearly 1,000 art sessions to over 120 care homes across Wales. Residents, staff and cARTrefu artists spoke about their experiences and the positive impact of art and creative activity on residents’ wellbeing.
Sponsor of the event Ogmore Assembly Member Huw Irranca-Davies stated: “It was good hear about this inspiring project that uses art whilst working with older people in care settings. Helping residents maintain health and well-being it also provides an opportunity to learn new skills and improve social skills.”
Believed to be the largest of its kind in Europe the programme is funded by the Arts Council of Wales and the Baring Foundation. Residents and care home staff were involved in a variety of art forms including dance, music, painting and creative writing.
